Positive Futures: Apprenticeships and traineeships in Queensland

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The apprenticeship and traineeship system combines employment-based experience with training and has a long tradition and history in Australia. There is now a much more diverse range of products labelled apprenticeships and traineeships than under traditional arrangements, with more options for delivery.

Many of the reports and reviews released over the past five years have examined and discussed issues and problems within the apprenticeship and traineeship system.  Jobs Queensland undertook a project to highlight what is working well within the system and (a) provide advice to build on these positives across the system and (b) identify opportunities to support workforce needs.

Jobs Queensland has delivered the Positive Futures: Apprenticeships and Traineeships in Queensland report. This report is the culmination of a project which began in November 2016 with the launch of the Positive Futures: Apprenticeships and Traineeships in Queensland discussion paper.

POSITIVE FUTURES REPORT

Jobs Queensland undertook an extensive statewide consultation process to discover what is working well within the system for employers, apprentices and trainees, industry and the broader community.

The 22 recommendations in this report provide advice to the Queensland Government to build on the strengths of the system to position Queensland to best meet current and future skills needs.

The Government's 2018 Progress Report is available at https://training.qld.gov.au/employers/engage-government/jobs-qld.

DISCUSSION PAPER

The release of the Positive Futures: Apprenticeships and Traineeships in Queensland discussion paper in November 2016 invited feedback and input. This marked the beginning of a broader project and resulted in the provision of strategic advice to the Queensland Government, designed to build on the strengths of Queensland’s apprenticeships and traineeships system.

Engagement in response to the discussion paper included:

  • An online survey, which received more than 290 responses.
  • Regional forums held in 26 locations across the state engaging industry, employers and other stakeholders in the conversation.
  • A more focused round of consultation, consisting of targeted focus groups with industry sectors, employers and stakeholders arising from the regional forums.
  • Close to 30 submissions from a range of stakeholders.
