Anticipating Future Skills

You can use the Anticipating Future Skills (AFS) series for workforce planning, to identify regional jobs growth or to help you make decisions about your future careers. It provides detailed employment projections to help you understand what Queensland’s future labour market might look like.

To help you find the information you need, we have developed a statewide overview, and region and industry profiles. You can explore the data yourself using either the Data Portal or the Data Explorer. Further information about the methodology, scenarios and other aspects of the AFS series are also available. Take the time to familiarise yourself with our data and explore your future.

While Queensland's job landscape is projected to grow across most industries in Queensland, more than 70% of additional jobs will be in 5 industries:

  • health care and social assistance
  • professional, scientific and technical services
  • education and training
  • public administration and safety
  • retail trade.

Queensland’s workforce will also be more skilled than ever, with more than 2.2 million working Queenslanders (72%) projected to hold a Certificate III or above as their highest qualification by 2027-28.

The top 5 regions for employment growth are projected to be:

  • Sunshine Coast (7.3% or 14,708 additional workers)
  • Logan-Beaudesert (6.6% or 9,320 additional workers)
  • Moreton Bay-North (6.4% or 5,768 additional workers)
  • Gold Coast (6.2% or 22,009 additional workers)
  • Brisbane (6.1% or 61,348 additional workers)

Total job opportunities will be even greater due to replacement demand - turnover due to people permanently leaving jobs means nearly 400,000 total job opportunities for Queenslanders.
